Old Photographs, video and memories

Joining Together with One Goal

Lauderdale-by-the-Sea has had many people who have come and gone, but thankfully we can all enjoy a memento, photograph or story of the past they have passed along or others have provided. It is with great thanks and continual support that has made this possible.

I say this as I received a phone call in which the caller identified himself as John Dobroth. He stated that his mother and father had come from the Chicago area and built a hotel on El Mar Drive calling it the Claredo in the 40's. He remarked the hurricanes of 1947 were a bit too much for his mother and being only 10 years old at the time they then moved to California. I stated his name did sound familiar and confirmed his father Edward was one of the Charter Committee group with Mr. Freidt that was successful in having the town re-incorporated in 1947. Before our conversation concluded l asked what life had brought him since in the move, he stated he was now a retired judge.

As it turns out I do have a picture of the Claredo ( aptly named for Edward and Clara ) an 8 room lodging, which was formerly on El Mar and Palm Ave corner beside the Casablanca aka Muirs Ocean Wave. When John's family sold it it became the Siesta Villas check out their rate card.

Shown in the background is the Swiss Inn,  imagine the view to the ocean John had
as shown here, no Villa Caprice or anything obstructing their or guests view to the ocean
